Original Patty Men Team up with Local Artist for Exclusive Wrapper Designs

Burger and craft ale specialists, Original Patty Men have teamed up with renowned Birmingham illustrator and artist, Simon Peplow to design their new paper burger wraps and tray liners.

Created in Peplow’s vibrant signature style, the eye-catching wrap prints were introduced on the 22/09/and have received widespread acclaim for their bold, Instagram-friendly designs and contemporary patterns.

The Birmingham street food duo came across Simon’s work on display at independent barbers, Black Market Barber Company in Kings Heath. After expressing an interest in his work, the pair found out that it was Simon who studied on the same Foundation Art course at Bournville College alongside OPM owner Tom Maher, and has since worked for a range of top-name brands including Nike SB and Le Coq Sportif.

Simon’s burger paper design centres around one of his signature characters and colourful arches which represent the railway arches of Moor Street station where the OPM restaurant is based.

Simon said: ‘The main aim for me with this collaboration was to represent the essence of OPM’s business: two gentlemen outliers with a humble presence and shared passion for delivering quality products to their loyal customer base. The character featured is loosely supposed to symbolise Tom & Scott and the many hats they wear as proprietors of an independent restaurant business. I also (rightly or wrongly) read into OPM’s choice of location and colour scheme to be a subversive dig (or dark homage) at the infamous American behemoth, famed for its arches logo.

“I chose to incorporate two of these primary colours into the mix, along with the green featured in OPM’s entrance / outdoor dining area to represent the source of their products – nature.”

Simon is the first designer to be invited by OPM to design the restaurant’s burger wraps as part of a new initiative to support emerging local talent. The Digbeth-based restaurant will be looking for a further two up-and-coming artists to design the papers over each quarter of the year.

Interested artists or illustrators should send a link to their portfolio or example work to info@originalpattymen.com by 12 November 2017 to be considered for the next round of papers.

OPM are open Thursday to Sunday and are currently in the progress of renovating the building next door to the Shaw’s Passage restaurant to open as a connecting bar. The bar is expected to be open early 2018 serving a wide variety of craft beers, smalls plates and charcuterie.
