Discover Rum! New tasting event will explore the tropical spirit
Rum tasting has arrived in Birmingham, as a new series of events aims to explore and enjoy the quintessentially Caribbean drink.
The next Discover Rum! evening takes place on Wednesday 6 April, and will feature an exploration of premium rums from the Dominican Republic. Expert Luke Todd-Wood will guide visitors through a tasting of five different rums from Brugal’s heritage distillery.
Founded in 1888, the brand still crafts its rums to a time-honoured process, featuring local sugar cane, double distillation, oak cask-ageing and unique blending. A relaxed talk will cover a brief history of rum, how it’s made, the different types of rum and how to choose one.
The venue is The Cuban Embassy, a new Latin American cocktail bar and restaurant with over 100 different varieties of rum available. The two-storey bar recreates a Havana-style haunt with authentic tiles, vibrant colours, and regular live music from resident Latin musicians.
As well as tasting 5 different rums, including a welcome cocktail, attendees will sample a selection of nibbles from The Cuban Embassy kitchen. A short live music performance will keep visitors entertained and complement the evening’s tropical theme.
Nick Rendall, director at the venue, said: “I’ve always been a huge fan of rum and after travelling to Cuba I wanted to create a venue with the same lively atmosphere and variety of rums I experienced there.”
Ahmed Ahmed, editor of Dine Birmingham, added: “It’s great to be able to work with The Cuban Embassy on these events. Hopefully rum fans and rum novices alike will now get the chance to discover more about this great spirit.”
