I really like rum and I like all different sorts of rum, so when Ahmed from Dine Birmingham said there was a rum tasting, I was really happy to share the details with BrumHour’s blog.

Rum tasting at The Cuban Embassy
Rum tasting has arrived in Birmingham, as a new series of events invites people to explore and enjoy the quintessentially Caribbean drink.
The first Discover Rum! evening takes place on Wednesday 9 March, and will feature an exploration of rums from Guatemala and the US Virgin Islands.
The relaxed talk will cover a brief history of rum, how it’s made, the different types of rum and how to choose one. Expert Joel Whitmore will guide visitors through a tasting of five different white, dark and spiced rums, including the premium Ron Zacapa brand.
Located in lively Moseley, The Cuban Embassy, is a new Latin American cocktail bar and restaurant with over 100 different varieties of rum available. The two-storey bar recreates a Havana-style haunt with authentic tiles, vibrant colours, and regular live music from resident Latin musicians.
As well as tasting 5 different rums, including a welcome cocktail, attendees will sample a selection of nibbles from The Cuban Embassy kitchen. A short live music performance will keep visitors entertained and complement the evening’s tropical theme.
Nick Rendall, director at the venue, said: “I’ve always been a huge fan of rum and after travelling to Cuba I wanted to create a venue with the same lively atmosphere and variety of rums I experienced there.”
Ahmed Ahmed, editor of Dine Birmingham, added: “It’s great to be able to work with The Cuban Embassy on these events. Hopefully rum fans and rum novices alike will now get the chance to discover more about this great spirit.”
Discover Rum! Tasting with Zacapa takes place on Wednesday 9 March. Tickets cost £13 and include 5 different rums, the expert talk, nibbles and a live music performance.
