Marco’s New York Italian at Holiday Inn, Birmingham Airport
It’s not often you get good food at an airport hotel. Most of the time food is designed to be eaten quickly and to get you filled on the way to your destination.
Marco’s New York Italian at Holiday Inn Birmingham Airport has taken a different approach. With comfortable and relaxing surroundings, this is a place to come and enjoy your food as well as an ideal place to meet for any occasion.
Marco Pierre White has a lifelong love of Italian-American food and the eclectic Main Menu is designed to bring that passion to the forefront. With such classics as Yellowfin Tuna a la Sicilian, Calamari Fritti with Spring Onion & Chilli, Spaghetti Al Pesto Genovese, Baked New York Italian Meatballs and Bolognese Pizza, there’s enough choice to satisfy all palates.
We arrived via car to take advantage of the complimentary parking; however, there is a free shuttle bus service from the Hotel to the Birmingham Airport between 05:00 and 23:15 giving ample time for people to enjoy their meals.
Whilst we chose our mains, we had a starter of Marco’s Quality Olives which came with grated Zarpellon Cheese, Grissini Breadsticks and Croccante, Warm Baked Sourdough and a portion of Grilled Jumbo Shrimps.
The olives were plump and tasty with garlic and salty undertones. Having the croccante and breadsticks helped balance out the salty flavour and there was plenty enough even for a table of 4. The warm baked sourdough matched the description and was nice and airy, it soaked the olive oil and balsamic well. The prawns were hot, and had just about the right amount if seasoning. They come with shells on and fingerbowls are provided to make sure you don’t get too messy.
For mains, we had Baked New York Italian Meatballs with an extra side of fries and the Great American Beef Burger.
The Meatballs were nice, fat and juicy with tender beef; the garlic ciabatta lightly toasted but still soft enough to help mop up the sauce. Accompanied by a classic iceberg wedge salad with a blue cheese dressing, it was a good fresh balance to add lightness to the meal.
The Burger was very hefty and enveloped in Monterey jack cheese, tangy bacon and BBQ Sauce, all wrapped in a brioche bun. The accompanied sides came seasoned well with fresh rosemary and crystal salt and were just the right amount to accompany the burger. The ketchup was presented in the world’s cutest little Kilner jar, which we were tempted to pinch!
To finish we, of course, had to have the Hot Italian donuts with Chocolate sauce. What makes them different to a normal donut was the addition of semolina to bring a lightness to the texture. With a light dusting of icing sugar and hot chocolate gooeyness, they were a perfect way to wrap up the meal with a coffee.
Ryan and Viv were invited to visit Marco’s New York Italian by Holiday Inn Birmingham Airport. We were asked to add #ClassicMarco to the tweets just so they could spot the content but were not told what to write. Ryan and Viv’s views are entirely their own.
