Retail Birmingham backs Birmingham hero

Intro by Dave Massey

I first heard Dave Heeley speak in public at a Love Brum event in 2015. His inspiring story proves that most people can achieve dreams that they really want to be come a reality.

He makes his determination sound casual, but he has worked really hard to try anything he wants to put his mind to. I’ll be chatting to Dave on Brum Radio Monday 15th February as I take over the Happy Talk Show between 12pm and 2pm at

Retail Birmingham backs Birmingham hero

Dave Heeley

Dave Heeley will be launching his first book, From Light to Dark, at Waterstones High Street in Birmingham Retail Birmingham, the city’s Business Improvement District, has partnered with flagship book store, Waterstones, to support the book launch of Birmingham hero, Dave Heeley.

Self-named ‘Blind Dave’ from West Bromwich, will be launching his first ever book, From Light to Dark, on Thursday 18th February at Waterstones High Street in Birmingham City Centre.

Born sighted, Dave showed athletic promise from an early age. However, a diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa at the age of ten years old shattered his sporting dreams and he hastily gave up on sporting activity.

Retinitis pigmentosa is a disease of the eye that leads to loss of vision and blindness. From Light to Dark is Dave’s heart-warming and inspirational story about the rediscovery of his love and talent for running, despite this devastating diagnosis.

Through his book, Dave details his journey undertaking some of the world’s toughest challenges, including John O’Groats to Land’s End, ten marathons in ten days, 700 miles of cycling across seven countries in seven days, and the 2015 Marathon des Sable – dubbed the ‘toughest footrace on Earth’.

The much-anticipated launch event at Waterstones will see Dave sharing more about his book, meeting and greeting members of the public, and answering questions about his life and achievements.

Steve Hewlett, Retail BID Manager said: “Blind Dave is a fantastic person who raises so much for charity, inspiring everyone that anything is possible through determination and spirit. We are proud that he has chosen his launch to be at the newly refurbished Waterstones in the city centre, the tallest bookstore in the UK!”

Since his journey began, 58-year-old Dave has raised a total of £3 million for a number of charities including The Albion Foundation, The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and Macmillan Cancer Support. He is the only blind person to have completed the ultimate endurance challenge of seven marathons, in seven consecutive days, on seven different continents.

Dave said: “I am really excited to be launching my new book and it’s wonderful to have the support of Retail Birmingham and Waterstones. It’s a dream come true and I am looking forward to sharing my experience with others.”

Alex Ashford, bookshop manager at Waterstones added: “We are excited to be launching From Light to Dark at our High Street branch. Dave’s story is truly inspiring and we hope lots of people join us on launch day to show their support and find out more about his extraordinary adventures.”

The book launch will take place from 6.30pm – 8pm on Thursday 18th February. For more information, please visit:
